BCBA Corner: Planning For Change
Summer is a time for sun, fun, and no school! It is a time for vacations, staycations, and new activities. For some individuals with autism, this change in routine can be difficult. Here are some tips to prepare your child for those changes.
Establish a routine. Even though most days will be filled with different activities, it is important to maintain a routine. Try to keep mealtimes and bedtimes consistent every day. This will ensure your child receives proper rest to prepare for tomorrow’s adventures.
Use visual supports. Try using a picture schedule for a daily routine or a social story for new activities and experiences. This allows you to prepare your child for upcoming events but also schedules time to rest. You can answer questions about new events and also discuss behavior expectations for each activity.
Prepare for Flexibility and Downtime. Things don’t always go as planned. Activities and play dates get cancelled, start and end times change, and sometimes kids are just tired. When possible, have a back-up plan so when something unexpected happens you won’t be scrambling for activity ideas. When going out in the community, bring some extra items with you such as books, crayons, or fidget toys to provide your child while waiting.
Use Positive Reinforcement. Let your child know when they do something good! This rewards them for following your behavior expectations as well as increases the likelihood that they’ll do it again.
Involve your child. If possible, allow your child to help plan your daily, weekly, or vacation activities. Ask them what they want to do or give them options. If they have specialized interests, try to incorporate those into activities and community outings. If your child has peers with the same interests, this is also a good time to practice social skills.
